EXAMINER'S GUIDE to

ORAL ADMINISTRATION OF PERFORMANCE CHECKLISTS

(Part I, Steps A, B, C) for

SHOTCRETE NOZZLEMAN CERTIFICATION

ACI Committee C 660

PART I, STEP A - PREPLACEMENT

1.a Name the required personnel needed in a typical shotcrete crew: nozzleman,

blowpipe operator, pump operator, hose helper (optional), finisher (optional).

b. Describe what each crew member does or is responsible for:

•Nozzleman: (apply shotcrete and direct the work)

•Pump operator: (check concrete for correct mix and slump, and operate

the pump)

•Helper: (move the hoses for the nozzleman)

•Blowpipe operator: (remove debris and loose material ahead of

nozzleman AND keep loose rebound out of the finished work)

2. Describe unacceptable weather conditions and why for:

a. Hot weather; How hot is too hot? (max. temp. = 100º F or 38º C); (Prevent rapid

evaporation and plastic shrinkage cracking).

b. Cold weather; How cold is too cold? (min. temp. = 40º F or 5º C); (prevent

freezing).

c. What do you do if it starts raining while you are shooting? (Stop and/or provide

cover/protection).

d. What do you do about windy conditions? and why? (Put up wind-breaks or stop;

prevent separation of fines from shotcrete stream).

Note: Examinee must correctly answer at least 3 of the above to get credit for

this item).

3.a Show me a concrete pump (must point at the pump); and explain how the pump

works.

b. Show me a compressor; What is the minimum compressor size to do wet mix

shotcrete? (185 cfm).

c. How do you check if the hoses are OK? Show me the hoses and a clamp; What

is normally used to prevent the clamp from opening accidentally? (Safety pin or

wire); What is inside the clamp? (Rubber gasket/ring to seal against paste

leakage).

d. Show me a nozzle; How do you clean a nozzle, and why is it important? (Check

internal air and/or water rings to ensure adequate mixing); What is important to

do when you put the nozzle down? (Leave air valve slightly open).

e. What is a blow pipe? and what is it used for? (See 1.b)

f. Explain line lubrication; How is it done? and what is used? and Why? Is it OK

to incorporate into the work? (No!)

4.a Show me your test panel, and check it for me, please; (Needs to check for panel

stability and tight reinforcement, and cleanliness)

b. Is this set-up OK for you (If no, ask what is wrong)

5. Hand signals: Note: Hand signals vary geographically, so there is no absolute;

but when asked to demonstrate the 5 following signals, he/she should do so

without hesitancy.

a. Provide/start air

b. Start pumping/provide material

c. Increase flow while pumping

d. Reduce/slow down material flow

e. Stop/shut down

6. While you are shooting, and the hose is suddenly plugged, what do you do?

a. Show me the signal for emergency stop

b. Show me the "brace for impact" position

c. How about the nozzle direction? (Safe direction)

d. When do you let go of the nozzle? (After the pressure is released)

7. How do you unblock the hose? (With wet mix, emphasize reversing the pump

first thing).

PART I, STEP B - START UP

Note: In a group session; items 1 through 6 will usually only be demonstrable by the first

examinee. These are items that nozzlemen will have addressed in STEP A above.

If he/she gave incorrect answer in STEP A, it should be marked as "wrong and/or

omitted" in STEP B.

The remaining items (STEPS B and C) must be demonstrated by the nozzleman

and are graded directly on the Performance Checklist.

After shooting test panel, ask: "Are you happy with your test panel?" If no, ask

what was wrong. "Do you want to do it again?" If yes, retest may be allowed if

time and materials permit.

11. How are you going to take care of the panel (curing)?
