1 Scope
This standard defines the requirements for Tailor
Rolled Blanks (TRB) and Tailor Rolled Tubes
(TRT) used in the manufacture of steel body
structure parts. Tailor rolled blanks shall be
produced from continuous cast hot or cold rolled
coils/strip (usually supplied in thicknesses
>1.75 mm) that are cold rolled to specific multiple
thicknesses, annealed or as-rolled, and galvanized
(if applicable), and then leveled and cut to
specified blank sizes. Tailor rolled blank products
shall be used for cold formed stampings and hot
formed stampings. Tailor rolled tubes shall be
manufactured from tailor rolled blanks that are
formed into circular tubes along the longitudinal
direction and joined by a laser welded seam.
1.1 Material Description. The material
designation is defined by the tailor rolled segment
thickness, GMW base metal specification number,
steel product type, minimum yield strength,
minimum tensile strength, galvanized coating type,
and the finish type. The steel product type is
designated by Cold Rolled (CR) for cold rolled
products. GMW2 low carbon and GMW3032 high
strength steel grades shall be specified by the steel
type and a three digit numeral to designate the
minimum yield strength of each tailor rolled
segment in megapascals (MPa). The minimum
yield strength, minimum ultimate tensile strength,
and minimum total elongation shall be established
by statistical analysis of tensile test results of TRB
or TRT samples. A designation of steel type shall
be added to solid solution strengthened grades (P
and IF) and high strength Low Alloy (LA) steels. An
F designation may be added following an LA steel
type to specify the steel as inclusion controlled.
Bake hardenable (B0 and B2) steel grades are not
applicable to tailor rolled blanks. The steel grades
will correspond to the chemical composition
requirements of the applicable tables of GMW2
and GMW3032. The galvanized coating type shall
be specified by the Electrogalvanized Coating for
(EG), or Hot Dip (HD) for galvanized coating
followed by the minimum coating weight per sheet
side. The finish type, an alpha character, will
designate the finish as either Exposed (E), Semi-
Exposed (Z), or Unexposed (U). Products without a
coating (i.e., bare steel) shall have the word
UNCOATED added to the call out after the steel
type, but before the finish designation.
Electrogalvanized coatings shall conform to the
requirements of GMW11. Hot dip galvanized
coatings shall conform to the requirements of
GMW8. Tailor Rolled Blanks produced from low
carbon boron alloy steel substrates for hot
stamping applications shall conform to GMW14400
uncoated or aluminized coated requirements. The
above descriptive items are used together to form
the coding system. Examples of the coding system
for engineering part drawings and manufacturing
engineering documents are shown in Section 8.
1.2 Symbols. Not applicable.
1.3 Typical Applications. Typical applications for
tailor rolled blanks include (but not limited to) body
structure panels such as roof bows, cross sills,
rocker panels, cross members, tunnel
reinforcements, radiator support assembly tie bars,
and B-pillars. Tubular applications include
instrument panel cross car beams.

3.1 Tailor Rolled Blank Requirements on
Delivery.
3.1.1 Chemical Requirements. Chemical
composition of tailor rolled blanks and tubes shall
meet the requirements of the applicable GMW2,
GMW3032, or GMW14400 steel grade.
3.1.2 Mechanical Requirements. The mechanical
property requirements of tailor rolled blanks and
tubes shall be established based on statistical
analysis of tensile test results from production
representative samples. Refer to Material
Qualification Requirements in Appendix B.
3.1.3 Blank Thickness and Dimensional
Requirements. The tailor rolled segments of tailor
rolled blanks shall conform to cold rolled nominal
thickness and thickness tolerance requirements as
described in GMW3224, not exceeding tolerances
tighter than ± 0.05 mm. Thickness and thickness
tolerances shall be specified by the detailed
engineering math data. In most cases, this
information can also be found on the detailed MPS
sheets issued by GM Body Manufacturing
Engineering.
3.1.4 Maximum Thickness Reduction. The
maximum thickness reduction of tailor rolled blanks
manufactured from hot rolled coils/strip shall be
65% maximum. Lower thickness reductions may
apply due to material strength and blank
development.
3.1.5 Maximum Widths. The current maximum
width of tailor rolled blanks is 750 mm.
3.1.6 Blank Length and Width Tolerances.
Unless otherwise specified by the Geometric
Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) datum
locating scheme, the permissible tolerances for
blank length is ± 2.0 mm. Blank width tolerance is
± 1.0 mm.
3.1.7 Minimum and Maximum Thickness to
Length Change (Slope) of Transition Areas. The
typical maximum thickness to length change
(slope) within transition areas shall not be more
than 1 mm/100 mm of length.
3.1.8 Blank Edge Preparation. Maximum
allowable burr on any edge shall be no >10% metal
thickness.
3.1.9 Surface Quality. Processing shall be
controlled such that the surface quality of the tailor
rolled blank meets the requirements of GM6180M
for the specified surface type.
3.1.10 Dimensions and Tolerances of the Blank
Stack. The blanks shall be stacked so that each
stack is identical in shape with the edges flush.
The dimensions and tolerances for the stacks are
as follows:
3.1.11 Stack Shift, Blank Stagger, and Stack
Lean Tolerances. Permissible tolerances for these
requirements are 26 mm (Figures A1, A2, and A3).
3.1.12 Flatness of a Stack. Unless otherwise
noted, the allowable variation in distance from the
top of the stack to the ground at any point in the
plan view of the stack will be agreed upon by the
supplier and GM Worldwide Purchasing (WWP)
Steel Supplier Quality. If necessary, dimples may
be added to the stack to maintain the flatness of
the stack. Recommended dimensions for the
dimples will be found in Figures A4, A5, A6, and
A7. The location of the dimples will be found on the
MPS sheet. Dimples should either be staggered, or
put on every other blank in a stack. The parallelism
shall not be obtained by additional devices (e.g.,
wooden wedges or blocks).
3.2 Tailor Rolled Tube Requirements on
Delivery.
3.2.1 Manufacturing Description. Tailor rolled
tubes shall be manufactured from tailor rolled
blanks that are formed into circular tubes along the
longitudinal direction and joined by laser weld
seam to create a butt joint. The laser weld butt joint
shall meet the requirements of ISO 13919-1
Quality Level C (Medium).
3.2.2 Tube Thickness and Dimensional
Requirements. Wall thickness tolerances for tailor
rolled tubes shall be ± 0.1 mm. Tube dimensional
requirements such as length, squareness of cut,
straightness and ovality, shall be shown in the
electronic math data file or engineering part

8 Coding System
This standard shall be referenced in other
documents, drawings, etc., as follows:
Material per GMW15619
This nomenclature specifies the thickness and
mechanical properties of each tailor rolled segment
in the longitudinal direction from the left edge (tail
of blank) to the right edge (head of blank) of the
tailor rolled blank (Figure A8). The coding system
shall consist of the applicable tailor rolled segment
thicknesses, the GMW Tailor Rolled Blank - Tailor
Rolled Tube specification number, steel product
type, minimum yield strength of each individual
tailor rolled segment, coating designation (if
applicable) and surface quality. A single steel
grade designation indicates that the steel grade is
constant along all tailor rolled segments in a given
blank. Multiple steel grade designations indicate
that the steel grade varies along tailor rolled
segments in a given blank. If the steel is to be
inclusion-controlled, an F may be included
following the steel type. The surface quality is
designated as U for Unexposed applications. For
coated applications, refer to GMW8 for hot dip zinc
coatings and GMW11 for electrogalvanized
coatings. This TRB-TRT specification shall be
called out on engineering drawings, electronic
math data files, manufacturing engineering
documents, and Global Purchasing and Supply
Chain (GPSC) purchasing document as shown in
the following examples:
