This AMPP standard represents a consensus of those individual members who have reviewed this document, its scope,
and provisions. Its acceptance does not in any respect preclude anyone, whether he or she has adopted the standard or
not, from manufacturing, marketing, purchasing, or using products, processes, or procedures not in conformance with
this standard. Nothing contained in this AMPP standard is to be construed as granting any right, by implication or other-

Foreword
Various industry standard specications exist for the mechanical preparation of steel surfaces via abrasive blasting,
water jetting, and power tool cleaning; however, until the publication of this standard, there had not been one that spe-
cically addressed power tool cleaning of delicate/specialty metals such as aluminum, copper, and stainless steels.
This standard is an alternative to SSPC-SP 17 and SP 11 and may be used by any industry professional intending to
produce a clean aluminum, copper, or stainless steel surface in preparation for coating in situations where other me-
chanical cleaning means are not feasible or desired.
The driving force behind the generation of this standard arose out of the increased use of aluminum in shipbuilding,
but the inclusion of the other subject metals makes it able to be applied more broadly to any industry where aluminum,
copper, or stainless steel is used.
When this standard is used in maintenance coating work, specic instructions should be provided on the extent of the
areas to be power tool cleaned to a standardized degree of cleanliness. In these cases, surface cleanliness (e.g., Level
1, 2, or 3) should be achieved across the entire area specied.
Rationale
Stainless steels, aluminum alloys, copper alloys, and other non-ferrous metals are widely used in industry. Existing
standards for preparation of carbon steel surfaces (e.g., SSPC-SP 3, SSPC-SP 11, and SSPC-SP 15) are not suitable
for these substrates, which have different mechanical and surface properties from carbon steels. The practices used
for preparation of carbon steels can often be too aggressive and may ultimately result in material degradation or poor
coating performance. This standard provides targeted language for preparation of these softer metals using power tools
and provides an alternative to SSPC-SP-17.
