Saudi Aramco: Company General Use
1 Scope
This specification covers the Saudi Aramco requirements of PST for power operated
Emergency Isolation Valve (ZV). The ZV valve assembly provides local control and
testing functionality for valve actuators. Functional requirements are clarified including
the partial stroke feature provided for on-line testing of ZV's. Partial Stroke Testing
(PST) system is not part of the Safety Instrumented System (SIS).
Alternative designs not covered by this specification shall only be used when pre-
approved by the Manager, Process and Control Systems Department.
2 Conflicts and Deviations
Any conflicts between this document and other applicable Mandatory Saudi Aramco
Engineering Requirements (MSAERs) shall be addressed to the EK&RD Coordinator.
Any deviation from the requirements herein shall follow internal company procedure
SAEP-302.

4 Terminology
4.1 Acronyms
DCS: Distributed Control System
LCP: Local Control Panel
SIS (or ESD): Safety Instrumented System
PST: Partial Stroke Testing
UPS: Uninterruptable Power Supply
4.2 Definitions
Distributed Control System (DCS): A process control system that is composed
of distinct modules. These modules may be physically and functionally
distributed over the plant area. The distributed control system contains all the
modules and associated software required to accomplish the regulatory control
and monitoring of a process plant, excluding field instruments, remote terminal
units, auxiliary control systems, and plant information systems.
Emergency Shutdown System (ESD): A system composed of sensors, logic
solvers, and final control elements for the purpose of taking the process, or
specific equipment in the process to a safe-state when predetermined conditions
are violated or when an operator initiates a shutdown. The system is designed to
isolate, de-energize, shutdown or de-pressure equipment in a process unit.
Another term commonly used throughout the hydrocarbon and petrochemical
industry is a Safety Instrumented System (SIS).
Partial Stroke Testing (PST): It is a way to verify emergency isolation valve
performance when functional testing is required while the emergency isolation
valve is on-line. Partial Stroke testing is not intended to take the place of full-
stroke emergency isolation valve functional tests. Rather, partial stroke
testing should be performed to meet the required functional test interval
