Standard Specification for
Glycol-Based Coolants for Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles

This standard is issued under the fixed designation D8565; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year of
original adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. A
superscript epsilon (´) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.
1. Scope
1.1 This specification covers the requirements for fully
formulated glycol-based coolants used in a fuel cell electric
vehicle (FCEV).
1.2 Coolants are designed for use in systems where the
coolant is in contact with the fuel cell stack.
1.3 The coolant may be used in systems designed for use in
a fuel cell vehicle equipped with an ion exchange resin to
maintain low electrical conductivity.
1.4 Coolants in this specification shall be used as supplied
and need no further dilution by the user.
1.5 Coolants shall protect against corrosion, freezing, and
overheating.
1.6 Coolants may circulate within the vehicle fuel cell stack,
battery, or other vehicle components, or may circulate through
a cooling plate heat exchanger used to remove heat from
batteries and other electrical components. Cooling plates con-
sist of a metal plate constructed with passages for the coolant
to circulate.
1.7 Coolants manage heat loads within the vehicle, prevent
thermal runaway, and may serve to either cool or heat the
batteries or electrical components.
1.8 Coolants shall be fully compatible with all system
components in which they are in contact, including metals,
polymers, and elastomers.
1.9 Coolants shall not be mixed with or contaminated by a
different coolant type.
1.10 Coolants may be used in non-vehicle applications. The
requirements for non-vehicle applications are not addressed by
this standard.
1.11 Units—The values stated in SI units are to be regarded
as standard.
1.12 This standard does not purport to address all of the
safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the
responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-
priate safety, health, and environmental practices and deter-
mine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.13 This international standard was developed in accor-
dance with internationally recognized principles on standard-
ization established in the Decision on Principles for the
Development of International Standards, Guides and Recom-
mendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical
Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

3. Terminology
3.1 For definitions of general terms used in Committee D15
on Engine Coolants and Related Fluids standards, refer to
Terminology D4725.
3.2 Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:
3.2.1 cooling plate, n—a heat exchanger used to dissipate
heat from batteries and other electrical components.
3.2.2 electric vehicle (EV), n—a motor vehicle that uses an
electric motor as a means of propulsion.
3.2.3 fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), n—an electric ve-
hicle where the primary source of electricity is produced from
a fuel cell stack.
4. General Requirements
4.1 Coolant shall be formulated with either 1,2-ethanediol;
1,2, propanediol; or 1,3 propanediol, and water.
4.2 Coolants may contain up to 50 % water.
4.3 Coolants shall have an electrical conductivity that does
not exceed 5 µS ⁄cm at 25 °C.
5. Detailed Requirement
5.1 Coolants shall meet the physical and chemical require-
ments of Table 1.
5.2 Coolants shall meet the performance requirements of
Table 2 and Table 3.
5.3 The requirements prescribed are for the coolant used in
vehicle cooling systems.
5.4 Coolants shall be used as supplied and need no further
dilution by the user.
5.5 Additional requirements may be specified by the cus-
tomer.
6. Labeling
6.1 It is recommended that all product packaging be labeled
with “Do not add water.”
