1. Introduction:
Interlaboratory Study 404 was conducted to establish a precision statement for C1303,
Test Method for Predicting Long-Term Thermal Resistance of Closed-Cell Foam
Insulation using the Prescriptive Approach.
The data for this Interlaboratory Study 404 came from a round robin that started
in 2002 to determine the bias of the thin slicing procedure to predict long term
thermal resistance (LTTR), described in the Annex of ASTM C1289-02
Specification for Faced Rigid Cellular Polyisocyanurate Thermal Insulation
Board. In addition to what is required by the Specification C1289 Annex,
additional measurements were made that allowed the application of the
Prescriptive Method of C1303.
See ASTM Research Report C16-1035 for complete information about the inter
laboratory test study for LTTR test procedure included in ASTM C1289-02
Specification for Faced Rigid Cellular Polyisocyanurate Thermal Insulation Board
2. Test Method:
The Test Method used for this ILS is C1303-12. To obtain a copy of C1303, go to
ASTM’s website, www.astm.org, or contact ASTM Customer Service by phone at 610-
832-9585 (8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Eastern U.S. Standard Time, Monday through Friday) or
by email at service@astm.org.
3. Participating Laboratories:
Two manufacturers located in Canada supplied the products. Two laboratories
independent of the industry were included (Bodycote Testing Group and Oak Ridge
National Laboratory - ORNL). 13 participating laboratories were initially part of the
testing program (see in Annex D the complete list of participants and contact names at
the time the study was started). Two laboratories never supplied any data and one lost the
samples and stopped sending data after about one year into the program. Finally, one
laboratory lost the samples for the 5-year measurement, but supplied all the required data
up to that time.
4. Description of Samples:
The study used three polyisocyanurate thermal insulation products (1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 inch)
from two different manufacturers. These products were ASTM C1289 Type II, Class 1,
Grade 2. Only third generation blowing agents were used to make the products.
All three products from each supplier were manufactured within a three-week period
using the same raw materials. Products were made with typical glass fiber reinforced
cellulosic felt as the facer. This facer is permeable to gas exchange.
From each manufacturer, seven 4 ft x 4 ft polyiso boards 2.0 inch thick with a permeable
facer were shipped to the 13 participants. About two weeks later, four 4 ft x 4 ft boards
1.0 inch thick, and four 4 ft x 4 ft boards 3.0 inch thick of the same type as the 2.0 inch
were also shipped. The boards were marked with the machine direction. It was requested
to store products as required in section A1.7.3 of the ASTM C1289-02 Annex (i.e. 73
+5oF and 50 +20% relative humidity).

5. Interlaboratory Study Instructions
Laboratory participants were emailed the test program instructions. For a copy of the
instructions, please see Annex A.
6. Description of Equipment/Apparatus1:
For information on the equipment/apparatus used by each laboratory, please see Annex
B.
7. Data Report Forms:
Each laboratory was provided with a data report form for the collection of data.
The 13 participants signed a confidentiality agreement. This agreement stipulates that
all results, documents, and records of the testing done will be held strictly
confidential, will not be used for commercial comparative purposes nor will they
be released to, nor discussed with, any third party. The complete raw database of
thermal resistance results of the Round Robin will remain confidential to PIMA.
8. Statistical Data Summary:
A summary of the statistics calculated from the data returned by the participating
laboratories is provided in Annex C.
9. Precision and Bias Statement:
9.6 A round robin was started in 2002 to determine the bias of the thin slicing
procedure described in the Annex of Specification C1289 on polyisocyanurate foam
insulation. Two manufacturers supplied products and the study involved 10 participating
laboratories. These products were ASTM C1289 Type II, Class 1, Grade 2, made with
typical glass fiber reinforced cellulosic felt as the facer. This facer is permeable to gas
exchange. Separate stacks of core and surfaces slices with a thickness of 10 mm [0.4 in]
were used in the study. The slices were prepared from 50.8 mm [2.0 in.] product. Three
full thickness products at 25.4 mm [1.0 in.], 50.8 mm [2.0 in.] and 76.2 mm [3.0 in.] were
also included in the study and their thermal resistance was measured every year. After
five years, bias results were calculated by comparing the predictions made from thin
slices to the thermal resistance of the three full thickness products aged in laboratory
conditions. In addition to what is required by the Specification C1289 Annex, additional
measurements were made that allowed the application of the Prescriptive Method in
C1303 with the following exceptions: the homogeneity and alternate thickness
applicability criteria were not tested, some of the measurements were made within three
to five days of the required date (exceeds C1303 prescriptive limits), some slices from a
few labs did not meet the thickness uniformity criteria, and only surface and core slice
stacks were measured. Despite these deviations from the prescriptive method, the results
