RATIONALE

This five year review of the SAE J524 standard incorporates revisions requested by producers, fabricators and users of this

material type. The updates include the following:

1. Added A recommendation for the use of metric size materials.

2. Edited applicable and related documents listing.

3. Revised straightness section to comply with latest verbiage.

4. Revised tube end condition section to comply with latest verbiage.

5. Revised surface finish section to comply with latest verbiage.

6. Updated cleanliness section to comply with latest verbiage.

7. Updated test certificate section to comply with latest verbiage.

8. Updated corrosion protection section to comply with latest verbiage.

9. Update packaging section to comply with latest verbiage.

1. SCOPE

This SAE Standard covers cold drawn and annealed seamless low-carbon steel pressure tubing intended for use as

hydraulic lines and in other applications requiring tubing of a quality suitable for flaring and bending.

In an effort to standardize within a global marketplace and ensuring that companies can remain competitive in an

international market it is the intent to convert to metric tube sizes which will:

• Lead to one global system

• Guide users to preferred system

• Reduce complexity

• Eliminate inventory duplications

3. MANUFACTURE

The tubing shall be cold drawn and annealed to produce a finished product which will meet all requirements of this document.

4. DIMENSIONS AND TOLERANCES

The tolerances applicable to tubing outside diameter are shown in Table 1. The wall thickness shall not vary more than

±10% for tubing having 12.7 mm or larger, nominal inside diameter nor more than ±15% for tubing having a smaller nominal

inside diameter. Tubing outside diameter and wall thickness shall be as specified by purchaser.
