Standard Specification for
Free-Cutting Brass Rod, Bar and Shapes for Use in Screw
Machines
1
This standard is issued under the fixed designation B16/B16M; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year of
original adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. A
superscript epsilon (´) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.
This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the U.S. Department of Defense.
1. Scope*
1.1 This specification covers the requirements for free-
cutting brass rod, bar, wire, and shapes of any specified cross
section produced from Copper Alloy UNS Nos. C36000 or
C36010 suitable for high-speed screw machining applications
and moderate thread rolling.
1.2 Units—Values stated in either SI units or inch-pound
units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text,
SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each
system are not necessarily exact equivalents; therefore, to
ensure conformance with the standard, each system shall be
used independently of the other and values from the two
systems shall not be combined.
1.3 The following safety hazard caveat pertains only to the
test method(s) described in this specification. This standard
does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any,
associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this
standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environ-
mental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory
limitations prior to use.
1.4 This international standard was developed in accor-
dance with internationally recognized principles on standard-
ization established in the Decision on Principles for the
Development of International Standards, Guides and Recom-
mendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical
Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

5. Ordering Information
5.1 Include the following specified choices when placing
orders for product under this specification, as applicable:
5.1.1 ASTM designation and year of issue.
5.1.2 Copper Alloy UNS No. C36000 or C36010. Unless
otherwise specified, the alloy supplied will be UNS No.
C36000.
5.1.3 Temper (see Section 8and Tables 2-5).
5.1.4 Product cross section form (for example, round,
hexagonal, square, etc.).
5.1.5 Dimensions by diameter or distance between parallel
surfaces (see Section 10).
5.1.6 How furnished; straight lengths or coils (see 6.2).
5.1.7 Edge contours (see Section 10).
5.1.8 Quantity; total weight or total length or number of
pieces of each size.
5.1.9 When product is purchased for applications requiring
thread rolling (see 1.1,Tables 2-5).
5.1.10 If product is purchased for agencies of the U.S.
Government (see Section 12).

in. [12 mm] and over (see
9.2.1).
5.2.2 Certification (refer to Specifications B249/B249M or
B250/B250M).
5.2.3 Test Report (refer to Specifications B249/B249M or
B250/B250M).
6. Materials and Manufacture
6.1 Materials:
6.1.1 The material of manufacture shall be a form (cast bar,
cake, slab, et cetera) of Copper Alloy UNS No. C36000 or
C36010 of such purity and soundness as to be suitable for
processing into the products prescribed herein.
6.1.2 When specified in the contract or purchase order that
heat identification or traceability is required, the purchaser
shall specify the details desired.
NOTE 1—Due to the discontinuous nature of the processing of castings
into wrought products, it is not always practical to identify a specific
casting analysis with a specific quantity of finished material.
6.2 Manufacture:
6.2.1 The product shall be manufactured by such hot
working, cold working, and annealing processes as to produce
a uniform wrought structure in the finished product.
6.2.2 The product shall be hot or cold worked to the finished
size, and subsequently annealed when required, to meet the
temper properties specified.
7. Chemical Composition
7.1 The product shall conform to the chemical composition
requirements in Table 1 for the Copper Alloys UNS No.
C36000 or C36010 specified in the ordering information.
7.2 These composition limits do not preclude the presence
of other elements. By agreement between the manufacturer and
purchaser, limits may be established and analysis required for
unnamed elements.
7.3 For alloys in which zinc is listed as “remainder,” either
copper or zinc may be taken as the difference between the sum
of results of all other elements determined and 100 %. When
all elements in Table 1 are determined, the sum of the results
shall be 99.5 % min.
8. Temper
8.1 The standard tempers for products described in this
specification are given in Tables 2-5.
8.1.1 O60 (soft anneal).
8.1.2 H02 (half hard).
8.1.3 H04 (hard).
8.2 Rod and bar shall be furnished in the H02 (half hard)
temper, unless otherwise specified in the ordering information
(see 5.1.3).
9. Mechanical Property Requirements
9.1 Tensile Strength Requirements:
9.1.1 Product furnished under this specification shall con-
form to the tensile requirements prescribed in Tables 2 and 3,
when tested in accordance with Test Methods E8/E8M.
9.1.1.1 Acceptance or rejection based upon mechanical
properties shall depend only on tensile strength.
9.2 Rockwell Hardness:
9.2.1 The approximate Rockwell hardness values given in
Tables Table 4 and Table 5 are for general information and
assistance in testing and shall not be used as a basis for product
rejection.
9.3 Mechanical property requirements for shapes shall be to
agreement between the manufacturer and the purchaser and the
agreement shall be part of that contract or purchase order.
10. Dimensions, Mass, and Permissible Variations
10.1 The dimensions and tolerances for rod, bar, and shapes
described by this specification shall be as specified in Specifi-
cation B249/B249M with particular reference to the following
tables and related paragraphs:
10.1.1 Diameter or Distance Between Parallel Surfaces:
10.1.1.1 Rod—Table 1.
10.1.1.2 Bar, Rectangular and Square—Tables 8 and 10.
10.1.2 Shapes—Dimensional tolerances shall be subject to
agreement between the manufacturer and the purchaser and the
agreement shall be part of the contract or purchase order.
